Lagos Takes Action Against Health Industry Fraud And Quackery

By enlisting the help of seven franchise firms for better service delivery, the Lagos State government has strengthened oversight of its Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) in an effort to combat quack medicine and malpractice.

The decision to work with reputable organizations in the private sector for compliance with health service provision in line with existing law was motivated by the desire to contain quackery in all its forms, according to Prof. Akin Abayomi, Commissioner for Health, who spoke yesterday at a news briefing after meeting with representatives of the franchise firms in Ikeja.

The private sector collaborative franchise model, which will be implemented in two stages, would broaden HEFAMAA’s reach and efficacy, he said. The model will be completely implemented in the second phase, and the lessons acquired from the pilot phase will be utilized to enhance the model and scale it up. The first phase, known as the pilot phase, is intended to test the model among a small number of partners and healthcare institutions.

The commissioner made it clear that the selected seven private organizations were carefully chosen from a shortlist of 21 in accordance with the state’s procurement procedure, and they will be in charge of overseeing both public and private health facilities in the councils under the direction of HEFAMAA and in accordance with its procedures.

SPC Patterns Consulting, Realms Health Care Consulting Services, IFS Healthcare, McOlivia Consulting Limited, AOI Training and Consulting Limited, Vhelar Consulting Limited, and E-clat Health Care Limited are among the private organizations that have been hired, according to Abayomi.
