Short-range Ballistic Missiles Are Launched By North Korea.

The latest in a series of weapons tests that Pyongyang claims are in reaction to significant US-South Korean defense exercises, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles on Monday, according to the South Korean military.

Days after the conclusion of Freedom Shield, their biggest joint military training in five years, the two partners were conducting a joint amphibious landing practice.

North Korea has regularly threatened to respond to such drills with “overwhelming” force because it sees them as invasion drills.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea reported that two short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the Chunghwa region in North Hwanghae province at 07:47 am (2247 GMT) into the East Sea, popularly known as the Sea of Japan.

It continued by stating that the missiles’ launch was a “serious act of provocation harming the peace and stability of the international community as well as the Korean peninsula” and that each missile traveled about 370 kilometers (230 miles) in flight.

The launch was also confirmed by the Japanese defense ministry, and officials were quoted in Japanese media as saying that both missiles were lost outside the nation’s exclusive economic zone.

Last week, according to North Korea’s official media, military exercises between the US and South Korea called for “stronger war deterrents,” including a “multi-faceted and offensive nuclear assault capacity.”

The North Korean military has conducted many maneuvers of its own recently, including the test-firing of an underwater nuclear-capable drone and its second intercontinental ballistic missile launch of the year, according to official media.
