Sanwo-olu Pledges Zero Tolerance For Burning In The Naira Redesign.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, said Wednesday that there was no reason for Nigerians to damage public or private property due to the redesign of the naira.

He also issued a warning, noting that law enforcement officers had been given explicit orders to assume total command and execute a zero-tolerance policy for acts of violence, arson, and damage.

In a speech on Friday in response to protests and violent demonstrations in certain areas of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu urged all law-abiding Lagos citizens to carry out their legal activities fearlessly.

He pleaded with everyone to maintain their composure and abstain from acts of violence that would destabilize the state.

The governor understood the suffering endured by Lagosians as a result of the Federal Government’s currency exchange program.

The governor stressed that damaging protests were not the solution, although acknowledging the inhabitants’ displeasure and the challenges involved with the attempt to exchange old Naira notes for new ones and its attendant repercussions on livelihood.

In the meanwhile, the Police issued a warning to Nigerians yesterday in Abuja, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

The Nigeria Police Force felt it was important to warn people and organizations against making divisive remarks and statements that might inflame the polity and lead to a crisis in the country in light of the current protests and responses to the new naira policy in the country.

This request is urgent because the police believe that some organizations and people are trying to incite unrest and stir up public opposition to the government and its policies in order to further their own unique interests and goals by acting in this way.
