OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed creator of ChatGPT, a much-hyped chatbot that can compose a poem, a college essay, or even a piece of computer code, is now the hottest company in Silicon Valley.
Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, invested in OpenAI early on, and Microsoft is reportedly in discussions to increase its original investment from $1 billion to $10 billion in an effort to compete with Google’s market-dominating search engine.
If accepted, the investment from the Windows manufacturer would value OpenAI at a staggering $29 billion, making it an unusual triumph in the IT industry at a time when big giants like Amazon, Meta, and Twitter are slashing expenses and eliminating jobs.
According to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, “Microsoft is definitely being proactive on this front and not going to be left behind on what might be a potential game-changing AI investment.”
Before ChatGPT was released, OpenAI had dazzled computer nerds with Dall-E 2, a program that generates digital graphics in response to a simple command.
Microsoft, which has made no secret of its interest in artificial intelligence, has already incorporated Dall-E 2 into a number of its products. Now, a Bloomberg story claims, the tech giant plans to graft ChatGPT onto its Bing search engine to compete with Google.
Since ChatGPT was released in November, people of the internet have been intrigued and curious by its abilities.
It can generate thorough, human-like responses to a variety of questions in a matter of seconds, which raises concerns that it may be abused by dishonest students or used to spread false information.
