Justice Must Be Served, Say Abdul Gaya’s Family.

The family of Senator Kabiru Gaya has urged the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Nigeria Police to launch an immediate investigation into their son Abdul Gaya’s death and apprehend those responsible.

The family petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, to re-arrest those already named in connection with the suspected murder of their son. The petition was signed by the family’s attorney, Hebo-Albert Ekito Afred of the Chambers of Halima I. Alfa and Associates.

The attorney said that several of the accused were given bail after being brought before a Federal Capital Territory High Court on charges unrelated to the crime of culpable murder.

In order to prevent a repetition of the offense and for the interest of justice, the petitioner asked the Police authority to re-arrest individuals who had been previously detained and “wrongly released” on behalf of the deceased’s family and friends.

The attorney who questioned the suspects’ release claimed that murder is a very serious crime and should be used as justification for a judge to deny bail. He added that those accused of murder, rape, kidnapping, or any other serious crime should be detained in jail or subject to extremely strict bail requirements.

“In this instance, the accused were charged with a separate offense, and judges have the authority to act based on evidence presented in court, which makes the Police complicit,” he stated. The evidence against the accused might be tampered with during the final 48 hours of the wrongfully released accused for a crime of suspected murder, endangering the lives and safety of witnesses.

According to the attorney’s conclusions, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) merely asked the police to conduct further inquiries into a few of the most important problems brought up by the dead person’s family and supported by eyewitness evidence from the scene.
