Google Reports 12,000 Job Losses

The parent firm of Google, Alphabet, made a large-scale reorganization announcement on Friday, cutting nearly 12,000 jobs worldwide.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, said in an email to staff, “We’ve chosen to decrease our workforce by around 12,000 jobs. The reductions are in reaction to a changing “economic reality.”

The decision was made a day after Microsoft said it will lay off 10,000 employees in the next months, after similar actions by Twitter, Amazon, and Facebook owner Meta, as well as by the once-untouchable tech industry as a whole.

To make sure that our employees and their jobs are in line with our top corporate goals, we’ve conducted a thorough evaluation of all product areas and functions, Pichai said.

“The jobs we’re getting rid of are a result of that evaluation.

“I accept full responsibility for the choices that brought us here since it weighs deeply on me that these changes will have an effect on Googlers’ lives.”
