Cocaine Is Found In Senegal Off The Coast Of Dakar.
|The military said on Tuesday that 800 kilograms (1,763 pounds) of cocaine were found onboard a ship 335 kilometers (208 miles) off the coast of Senegal’s capital.
Although Central and West Africa have long served as a hub for drugs manufactured in Latin America, UN investigators claim that the region is now a rapidly expanding market for illicit substances.
The military forces announced the capture in a statement on Sunday, but they provided no information about the intercepted vessel, the people on board, where it originated, or the amount of the haul.
The largest land-based cocaine seizure in the history of Senegal occurred in October when customs officials there confiscated 300 kilograms of cocaine worth around $36 million from a refrigerated truck near the Malian border.
According to a June 2022 report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, at least 57 tonnes of cocaine were intercepted in or on their way to West Africa between 2019 and 2022.
