Al-shabaab Assault Results In The Death Of Seven Somali Troops.

The government said that seven soldiers were killed in an Al-Shabaab assault on a military base on Friday in a Somali town that had been retaken by the army this week in a major operation against the terrorist organization.

The Islamist terrorists invaded the camp in Galcad, a hamlet in central Somalia some 375 kilometers (230 miles) north of the capital Mogadishu, according to the information ministry. A senior military officer was reportedly one of those murdered.

It claimed that around 100 Al-Shabaab militants had died.

According to a statement from the ministry, “there was significant battle there in which the (jihadists) were beaten,” and “the place is now fully under the control of the Somali troops.”

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assault and said it had murdered more than 150 troops by taking control of the camp.

It was unable to independently verify the information.

Before face-to-face combat broke out, the Shabaab militants “blasted two vehicles filled with explosives,” Galcad resident Abdilahi Rage told AFP over the phone.

“They momentarily succeeded in driving the army back into the camp, but reinforcements arrived, and they withdrew.”

Just one day after the government declared a “historic triumph” over the jihadists by seizing the vital coastal town of Haradhere and Galcad, Al-Shabaab launched a fatal assault on a military post in another area of central Somalia.
