On Monday, ASUU will have an urgent NEC meeting to discuss salary cuts.

ASUU’s (Academic Staff Union of Universities) National Executive Council (NEC) will convene in Abuja on Monday.

The urgent NEC meeting was called to discuss paying academics at federal institutions 18 days’ salaries for October.

On Thursday, the Federal Government paid university teachers’ half-salaries for the month of October, but it still owed them for the previous seven months.

There are already reverberations on several campuses about the payment of half wage to university instructors.

“I was startled at the amount deposited to my account when I received the warning. I had to phone a coworker, and she verified that her pay had been reduced. Additionally, I told the branch chairman about the change.

“This government’s attitude to the matter is not honest. Lecturers are being treated like young children without care after the eight-month strike was halted. A top UNILAG instructor said, “I don’t feel like returning to the class again, but we have to do the necessary for the pupils.”

The NEC meeting has been scheduled for Monday, according to one of the ASUU’s zonal coordinators, and the topic at the top of the agenda is the partially paid wage.

“A large number of our members are upset about the government’s actions. I will advocate for a strike if not for our pupils. The coordinator said that our leaders must alert the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who intervened before we called off the strike.

The non-academic staff was paid their full wage for October, notwithstanding the lecturers’ complaints about their half pay.

According to certain members of the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the government has been paying their full salaries.

With the October payment, the Federal Government now owes ASUU members five months’ worth of unpaid non-teaching staff wages and seven months’ worth of unpaid salary.
