This summer, Newcastle will want to sign Scott McTominay after manager Eddie Howe determined that the Scottish international could fit right into his Magpies team.
McTominay has struggled to find his place fully in Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad and has often been deployed as a replacement.
McTominay’s time in Ten Hag’s favoured starting XI has been decreasing as competition in the midfield from Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Fred has increased.
Newcastle believes that United may cave in as Ten Hag tries to finance his own hiring drive during the transfer window, even though United has previously been firm about not letting the midfielder move, according to The Telegraph.
The club has reportedly been following the 26-year-old for a year and head scout Steve Nickson and director of football Dan Ashworth concur with Howe regarding his value.
McTominay was the subject of reports from the Magpies in January, but United was adamant at the time about keeping the midfielder.
Howe plans to substitute McTominay for Jonjo Shelvey, who was permitted to join Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window, as a deep-lying midfielder.
Shelvey swiftly renounced his support for the northeastern squad, recently referring to his former teammates as “whingebags” after Forest’s 1-2 defeat to the Magpies at home.
Howe would feel more comfortable releasing Bruno Guimaraes to act as a well-supported playmaker by placing McTominay in front of a defensive four.
In addition to fitting into the system, McTominay would be able to inject some much-needed experience into a Newcastle team that has its sights set firmly on European competitiveness.
Howe has shown interest in acquiring Kieran Tierney, an Arsenal left-back, in the past. Howe is keen on recruiting players about whom he has in-depth information and is thus drawn to those with British football experience.
Newcastle, though, won’t be able to start really considering their future signings until the conclusion of the current campaign since the amount of money they have available will depend on where they play this year in Europe.
Newcastle, which is now in fifth place in the Premier League, has two games on fourth-place Tottenham, whose probable surrender may occur just in time for the Magpies to beat the North London club into the Champions League next season.
Nevertheless, Howe intends to bring in “five or six” players to increase the squad’s depth, with Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Leicester’s James Maddison being the top choices for the offensive midfield position.
According to reports, Maddison wants to win a trophy next season, which may seem far away to supporters of his present team.
Leicester is now fighting for its survival at the very bottom of the standings, one point above the bottom three teams.
The potential for bigger earnings than those that Newcastle would be interested in providing, though, may prevent Maddison from moving north.
