The 36-year-old World Cup winner goalkeeper Hugo Lloris confirmed his retirement from international play on January 9.
Following the anguish of France’s terrible World Cup final defeat to Argentina in Qatar last year as they sought to defend their 2018 title, the Tottenham and France goalkeeper, who accumulated a record 145 appearances and led the country 122 times, announced his retirement from international participation.

Didier Deschamps, the manager of Les Bleus, said, “He informed me about his choice a few days ago. Even though he still had a place in our squad, as he proved in the most recent World Cup in Doha, I must accept his choice even if we are unhappy. I wish to honor the remarkable career of a key contributor to the French squad who is retiring.
“Hugho is a magnificent guy on a human level, above all the records that his skill and professionalism have enabled him to break, beyond the crucial part that he has played in our most beautiful triumphs. I preserved the armband for him as captain when I took over as coach in 2012, and I never looked back; quite the opposite.
Hugo has a high opinion of himself.
He has always had a communal mindset and has always placed the French team’s interests first, sometimes even at his own expense.
