Cody Gakpo, a recent addition to Liverpool, claims that it was Virgil van Dijk who persuaded him to sign with the Anfield club.

Last night, Gakpo moved from PSV Eindhoven to Liverpool for a reported £37 million.

After receiving his work visa, the Netherlands striker will be formally introduced as a Liverpool player. His physical was completed on Wednesday.

Gakpo was eager to acknowledge Van Dijk, a fellow international teammate who was instrumental in persuading him to sign with Liverpool.

Gakpo said on the club’s official website that they had been speaking on the phone often recently.

“What he said was that this is the ideal move for me to make and for me to improve and to become a better player. He also said that the club is a very huge and gigantic club but also like a true family – I believe that is also very important for me because I am a family man. He simply spoke positively.

“At the very time I was phoning [in] with the coach [Jurgen Klopp], he entered the office, saw me, and we had a little conversation. He can assist me with certain things, so I’m glad he’s here as well. I am really thankful to be here.
