By allowing Qatar to dress Messi in black robes, FIFA broke the rules.

As noted by former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega on Twitter, FIFA broke its own regulations by allowing Qatar to wrap Argentina’s Lionel Messi in a black Arab robe before to the World Cup trophy ceremony.

Messi grabbed center stage as he was ready to hoist the World Cup trophy after Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties in the final on Sunday.

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar, welcomed the Paris Saint-Germain striker before the highlight moment and clothed him in a traditional Arab outfit called a bisht.

The traditional attire, which is worn especially during important ceremonies like weddings and other festivals, denotes honor and status.

On Monday, Vega brought attention to a portion of FIFA’s rules that specified “celebratory apparel” may only be worn once certain procedures had been completed.

The rule 27.2 said:

“Celebrity apparel may only be worn on the playing field during FIFA final tournaments upon the completion of the following approved FIFA actions” (during which the team must wear the shirts they wore during the match in question).

The trophy presentation, FIFA-approved photos, and authorized media appearances are some of them.

Then, Vega added a number of questioning emojis to go along with his photograph of the rules, evidently perplexed as to why the world football governing body had let Qatar to perform the rite.

Hassan Al Thawadi, a representative of Qatar, has previously given an explanation of why Messi had to wear a bisht.
