After leaving the World Cup, Belgium’s athletes took separate flights home.

Following their early World Cup departure, five Belgian players are allegedly flying home separately from the rest of the team.

After earning only four points from their three games, the Red Devils were surprisingly eliminated from the competition at the group stage. They fell short behind Morocco, who won the tournament, and Croatia, which came in second.

Their on-field performances left a lot to be desired, and they also had several problems off the field. Kevin De Bruyne’s remarks about them being “too old” did not sit well with the team.

And now Het Laatste Nieuws is reporting that several players chose to fly alone home rather than take the team bus.

The flights taken by Thomas Meunier, Axel Witsel, Jeremy Doku, Arthur Theate, and Lois Openda cost money and arrived in Brussels before the Friday squad trip (December 2).

De Bruyne, the captain and key player for Manchester City, was at the center of the controversy when he downplayed Belgium’s prospects of winning the competition after a lackluster performance in their first match, which they won 1-0 against Canada.

He looked to quarrel with Toby Alderweireld during the game. Additionally, he reportedly got into a fight with senior teammates Jan Vertonghen and Eden Hazard after their 2-0 loss to Morocco in their second group match. Romelu Lukaku reportedly had to break up the fight between the three players.

When Vertonghen added, “We presumably also attack poorly because we are too old, that must be it now, certainly,” he was making fun of De Bruyne in the mixed zone.

Despite being rated second in the world by FIFA, they went out of the World Cup with a whimper following a 0-0 draw with Croatia on Thursday (December 1). Manager Roberto Martinez resigned soon after the match.
