South Africa Parliamentary Speaker Bribed With Wig, $135,000
|
South African prosecutors are investigating the country’s parliamentary speaker over allegations she accepted $135,000 in bribes over a three-year period, and a wig, for some reason. During a meeting at an airport in February 2019, Mapisa-Nqakula allegedly received over $15,000 and the wig. She is also accused of soliciting an additional payment of $105,000 (without a wig). The identity of the person offering the bribes has not been revealed, although it was clearly someone with a spare wig.
Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has denied all accusations of corruption and misconduct, and has pledged to cooperate with the authorities. In the meantime, it is advised not to say ‘keep your hair on’ to the Speaker.
