Israel Informs America Of Preparations For A Massacre In Rafah

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that any attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza would threaten to impose “greater isolation” on Israel and harm its security in the long term. Blinken added to reporters as he left Israel that he had “frank conversations,” referring to his meetings with officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He stated that any ground military operation in Rafah “risks killing more civilians. It also raises the risk of causing greater destruction of humanitarian aid. It threatens to impose greater isolation on Israel around the world and jeopardize its long-term security and standing.” Netanyahu, for his part, said that he informed Blinken on Friday that Israel intends to launch a military operation on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, even without the support of the United States. Netanyahu said after his meeting with Blinken: “There is no way for us to defeat Hamas without entering Rafah and eliminating its remaining brigades there,” adding, “I told him that I hope to do so with the support of the United States, but if necessary, we will do it alone.” The city of Rafah in southern Gaza houses more than a million Palestinians who took refuge there due to the Israeli bombing and invasion of the Strip. He added: “I told him that I really appreciate the fact that we have been standing together in the war against Hamas for more than five months. I also told him that we realize the necessity of evacuating civilian populations from war zones and of course meeting humanitarian needs as well, and we are working to achieve this goal.” For its part, the US State Department said that Blinken stressed during his meeting with Netanyahu today the necessity of protecting civilians in Gaza and continuing humanitarian aid through land crossings and sea routes. Blinken also discussed efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement for at least six weeks that would ensure the release of prisoners and increase humanitarian aid, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement. The United States has been pressuring Israel for weeks to refrain from invading Rafah, whose population has risen to one and a half million people, according to the United Nations, with the influx of displaced people there from the devastated areas in the north and center, for fear of a humanitarian catastrophe. Blinken said Thursday that it was “a mistake” to carry out an Israeli operation in Rafah, adding, “There is a better way to deal with the continuing threat posed by Hamas.” Washington, the most prominent supporter of Israel politically and militarily since the outbreak of the war, also repeatedly criticized it due to the restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid and the heavy human toll on civilians in the besieged Palestinian enclave. Blinken arrived in Israel earlier today on his sixth tour in the region since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7. Blinken visited Saudi Arabia and Egypt this week as part of his regional tour to discuss efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Today, the United Nations Security Council failed to issue a draft resolution proposed by the United States stressing “the utmost necessity of reaching an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza,” after Russia and China used their veto power against it.
