Residents Of The Fct Complain About The Constant Increase In Food Costs Problems.

Due to the rising cost of food and the devaluation of the naira, inhabitants of Bwari, Federal Capital Territory, are suffering severe challenges.

As opposed to the decline in costs in states and rural regions, a journalist for the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) interacted with locals on Friday and learned that food prices had continued to grow unabatedly.

In the Bwari market, tomato vendor Ms. Talatu Danjuma said that the cost of the good had increased recently.

“Now, a basket costs N16,000 instead of N5000 or N6000.

Danjuma explained the increase as being caused by the high cost of moving items from farms because of a lack of gasoline.

On the other side, Mrs. Blessing Yohanna, a vendor of yams, expressed concern about how the shortage of the naira was harming her business since most transactions were now cashless and dealers in remote regions would not accept electronic transfers.

“My money is still hanging by around N30,000 owing to network problems with transfers.

Five yam tubers, which we previously sold for N2,500, are now N3000 because we have to pay POS (Point of Sale) fees, Yohanna said.

Mr. Philip Abang, a different resident, criticized the excessive fees levied by the POS operators and called them “outrageous”.

Bank and gas station lines are becoming longer every day, which is badly hurting companies.

“I believed the Supreme Court’s decision on the return of the old N500 and N1,000 notes would improve our nation’s situation.

“It is sad that people are still rejecting the old notes and the new money is not in circulation up to now,” Abang added.

He urged the Federal Government to act quickly to address the problems in order to save the majority of people.

It is so horrible that I have to arrive at the bank at 4:00 am to choose a number in order to withdraw cash, said Abang.

According to a NAN poll, food costs have typically increased slightly or remained about the same. For example, a bottle of palm oil that formerly cost N100 is now N1200.

Nonetheless, prices for a bag of rice still range between N37,000 to N45,000, depending on the brand and whether it is imported or locally produced.

A kilo of beef now costs as much as N3500, while a cup of egusi (melon) is being sold for N400 rather than N300. A carton of eggs is now N2500 rather than N2200.
