Fear of a postponed election: The FG insists there is “no reason for panic”

The general elections will proceed as scheduled, the Federal Government has told Nigerians. Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, provided the guarantee yesterday while dispelling worries that the polls would be postponed or even cancelled due to the high level of insecurity nationwide.

The Ministers responded to a report attributed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the general elections across the country scheduled for February are in grave danger of being called off due to insecurity. They spoke at the occasion of the ongoing presentation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s scorecard.

Insecurity “may eventually culminate in the cancellation and possibly postponing of elections in sufficient constituencies to prevent proclamation of elections results and trigger a constitutional crisis,” an INEC official had warned.

However, the Minister stressed that “there is no reason for panic” since the federal government is collaborating with the necessary departments to achieve free and fair elections.
