The Economic Community of West African States will bestow the democracy icon award on President Muhammadu Buhari (ECOWAS).
As he gets ready to leave office at the end of his two terms in office, President Buhari will receive the award in honor of his contributions to the sub-regional defense and development of democracy.
This was said on Tuesday by Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the president of Guinea-Bissau and the chairman of ECOWAS, during a meeting with the president that took place outside of the current 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Doha, Qatar.
Embalo pointed out that Buhari has exerted more effort than any other leader to promote democratic governments in West Africa as well as excelled in his efforts to fight the rise of undemocratic regimes.
He continued by saying that Buhari’s accomplishments in defending and advancing democracy as a form of governance throughout the subregion are recognized by the award.
He said that the Nigerian leader had taken the lead in supporting democratic governments in West Africa and had fought hard to prevent the rise of authoritarian regimes.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari expressed support for the idea and emphasized that democracy is the most effective method for uniting disparate groups of people and a trustworthy tool for achieving national progress.
When the new ECOWAS headquarters building in Abuja is finished, Shehu added, “for this, the ECOWAS Chairman, President Buhari will have his name on the Roll of Honor, so that future generations of West African people would know about the grandeur he accomplished and to emulate his noble examples.
