Attacks Cause Benin Banks To Shut

Due to the devastation of several of their facilities on Wednesday, banks in Benin, the city of Edo, stopped providing services to clients on Thursday.

Several of the commercial banks in the Benin city were locked up, according to a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) journalist who visited them.

Security guards were guarding the gates of banks, according to NAN, but attempts to elicit a reaction from some of the institutions were unsuccessful since the authorities would not speak.

A few bank clients who were visible outside several of the bank locations complained that they couldn’t get cash out.

When expressing his anger over the damage, Mr. Peter Idahosa, a bank client, pointed out that the innocent bystanders would suffer the most.

While it is regrettable that the banks’ facilities were damaged, we understand that individuals are upset that they cannot access their hard-earned money from the institutions.

The state’s current cash shortage will become worse as a result of the banks’ current condition.

Due to assaults on their facilities and a shortage of cash to distribute to consumers, point of sale (PoS) agents in the city center also stopped operating.

According to NAN, several irate locals protested their inability to withdraw money from banks, ATMs, and Points of Sale (PoS) on Tuesday by taking to the streets.

During the rally, some of the demonstrators assaulted and damaged bank equipment, including ATMs and trucks.

The demonstration, which continued for many hours along key important roadways in the state, is said to have resulted in the deaths of four people.

United Bank for Africa, Unity Bank, Polaris Bank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, First Bank, and a few microfinance institutions are just a few of the banks that have been targeted.

Also, according to NAN, irate protestors mostly stormed banks along Ugbowo Road, Akpakpava Road, and Sakpoba Road.

But, the Benin metropolis’s main thoroughfare is now being blocked off by the Nigeria Police Force.

Moreover, security personnel from the Army, NSCDC, and Police have seized control of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters and its neighboring roadways.

With limits on mobility, the Akpakpava Road leading to the CBN headquarters was blocked.
