Africa Is A Big Sesame Importer—shanghai Customs

The amount of sesame imported into Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Port this year was 1,845 tonnes, according to Shanghai Customs, a 4.3-fold rise year over year.

According to Shanghai Customs, Waigaoqiao serves as the primary port of entry into Shanghai and China is now the biggest market for the import of African sesame.

Sesame imports were mostly reported as coming from Mali, Togo, Mozambique, Niger, and Tanzania during the first two months of this year.

According to Wu Zhigang, owner of a grain and oil company in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, east China, imports of African sesame are mostly utilized to extract edible oil because of their excellent quality and cheap cost.

According to Wu, his business aims to import more than 10,000 tonnes of African sesame this year, up from more than 3,000 tonnes in 2022, due to an increase in demand for sesame oil goods on the Chinese market.

According to statistics from Shanghai Customs, more than 40,000 tonnes of African agricultural goods, including sesame, worth more than 100 million dollars, were imported via Shanghai ports in the first two months of this year.
