Maryland elects its first Black American governor

Wes Moore, a Democratic politician from the United States, defeated Republican Dan Cox to become Maryland’s first Black governor in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1.

The results of the election on Tuesday, October 8 reveal that Democrat Roy Moore beat Republican Dan Cox, making him the state of Maryland’s first Black governor.

Wes Moore, a charismatic best-selling author and former leader of the anti-poverty group Robin Hood, has recently been elected as America’s third Black governor.

When discussing his “leave no one behind” campaign after winning, Moore said:

We lived by a simple rule when I was an Army captain and led troops into battle in Afghanistan: “Leave no one behind. Real patriotism requires bringing people together. It entails uplifting and bettering one another’s lives.

Aruna Miller, Moore’s running companion, made history by becoming the first immigrant to be elected lieutenant governor of Maryland.

After two terms under Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, one of the most well-liked governors in the nation, Moore’s victory returns control of the state to Democrats.

In the 246-year history of the nation, he is now one of just two Black governors, along with Deval Patrick and Douglas Wilder of Virginia.
