Iran demonstrations resulted in almost 200 deaths.

Iran’s top security body announced on Saturday that more than 200 people have died since nationwide demonstrations over Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody began.

After being detained in Tehran on September 16 for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s dress code for women, Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish descent, passed away.

The country’s Supreme National Security Council was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying that “exceeds 200” people had died in the unrest brought on by her passing.

According to the report, the number also included security personnel, ordinary citizens, and “separatists,” in addition to “rioters”—a term used by Iranian authorities to describe protesters.

For the first time this week, a commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that the unrest had claimed the lives of over 300 people.

The security council said that in addition to the death toll, the violence had also resulted in damage worth millions of dollars.

Iran Human Rights, a non-governmental organization with offices in Oslo, reported on Tuesday that security forces had “killed at least 448 people in the ongoing nationwide protests.”

Volker Turk, the UN’s human rights head, said last week that 14,000 people, including children, had been detained during the crackdown on the protests.
