Irabor declares that despite pressure, we won’t compromise on 2023.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor, revealed yesterday that security agencies are under intense pressure from all sides to tamper with the elections, despite repeated assurances from President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) toward credible and trouble-free 2023 general elections.

He however allayed concerns about a rushed procedure and urged Nigerians to have faith in the security forces since they are steadfastly dedicated to maintaining their neutrality before, during, and after the exercise.

Irabor, who spoke at the Ministerial Media Briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja under the direction of the Presidential Communications Team, revealed that security personnel, in particular, are subject to pressure through a variety of inducements. He added, however, that the hierarchy has put in place measures to ensure that the men follow the order to maintain neutrality.

He said that standard operating procedures (SOP) for the run-up to, during, and after the elections have been defined and provided to the staff, who are also being instructed to conduct themselves more professionally.

Regarding the military’s readiness to resist efforts to tamper with elections in light of the President’s call for neutrality, he responded: “I’m delighted that you restated the Commander-in-instruction Chief’s to the armed forces.

“I’m sorry, but you say you worry. I believe that trust should serve as the anchor rather than concern. Why?

Of course, there will always be demand to use security forces rather than solely the military from all sides. And that’s what criminal business is all about.

“However, what distinguishes us is our professional approach to handling such problems. And as the military, it is what we are dedicated to accomplishing.

“Therefore, please stop worrying. Instead, have confidence that we will adhere to our objectives, and encourage others to have faith in us.

The Defence Chief continued by saying that the armed forces have given their participation throughout the nation a boost to combat current and emerging threats. They have also put in place backup measures to ensure a peaceful election process and help INEC along with other security agencies.
