HEDA warns the National Assembly to finish the constitutional study or risk legal action.

The National Assembly has been warned that failure to finish its study of the Constitution might result in legal action, according to the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Center).

The organization also denounced corruption in the nation and urged regulatory and professional agencies to punish guilty individuals. This information was presented during HEDA’s sixth annual Compendium of 100 High-profile Corruption Cases in Nigeria, which took place over the weekend in Lagos.

Sulaimon Arigbabu, executive secretary of HEDA, said at the occasion that corruption is Nigeria’s problem and its source. The Constitution has to be reviewed immediately. There are many things going on as a result of Constitutional gaps.

“That Constitution hinders all agencies in one way or another. The Constitution does not have enough measures to at least assist in reducing corruption. It’s very bad that individuals who have the capacity to influence this are using it to promote corruption rather than fight it.

He added: “Unfortunately, some of the persons whose corrupt cases were reported in the past have made their way into top places in the nation. The compendium serves as a reminder of the corrupt cases Nigeria has. Because Nigerians have a tendency to forget, some have been appointed to high positions and others have become governors.

“We are doing this to assist Nigerians keep track of why some of these cases sit in court indefinitely, and the bottlenecks utilized by attorneys or those who have been accused of corruption in preventing the legal process from moving forward.”
