CAN president call for calm, reliable elections?

The president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, and the Sultan of Sokoto and head of the Supreme Council on Islamic Affairs, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security organizations to be impartial and guarantee free, fair, and credible elections in 2023.

The Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) held its 4th quarterly meeting yesterday in Abuja, with the theme “Peaceful and Credible Elections for National Renaissance.” The religious leaders present noted that the role of INEC and security agencies is crucial to ensuring a smooth election process that meets all requirements.

The Sultan questioned if the 2023 election will result in optimism for the nation due to ethnic and religious propaganda, despite the fact that votes are intended to inspire fresh hope.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari has informed the nation and the world community of his commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. He won’t always be present. But we serve as the President’s eyes and ears. When anything isn’t right, we have to speak to him. He has guaranteed trustworthy elections. Let’s be hopeful and trust in him. But even if one or two others do anything behind his back, the All-Powerful God will still hold him responsible.

Security agencies and INEC play a crucial role. They must be trustworthy and unbiased. In the southeast, how many INEC offices have burned down? Will this have an impact on the election? The general election must be impartially overseen by INEC in order to be free and fair. Before the elections, we’ll convene a meeting with the security chiefs to go over concerns and anxieties among the populace.
