WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY -17th MAY.

Every year on May 17th, World hypertension day is commemorated to increase public awareness for high blood pressure, usually referred to as hypertension. The World hypertension league (WHL)  is promoting prevention, identification and control of hypertension through global campaign.

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure and to motivate people to regularly check their blood pressure, live a healthy lifestyles and when required, seek medical guidance.

High blood pressure, often known as hypertension, is frequently referred to as a ‘silent killer’ because there are frequently no obvious signs.

if left untreated, it could be detrimental effect on one’s health.

      ABOUT HYPERTENSION.

Hypertension is the increase in high blood pressure.

Nowadays in so much busy life, people are not getting time for themselves and are suffering from stress and tension which further leads to hypertension problems. A person suffering from hypertension disease damages their health and is not able to concentrate on their work properly. People become unconfident in several types of activities.

So, we can say that hypertension is another name for high blood pressure which can cause severe complications and also increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and death.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the growth of the processed food industry has impacted the amount of salt in diets and this plays a major role in hypertension.

TYPES OF HYPERTENSION.

Hypertension disease is classified into two namely primary hypertension and secondary hypertension.

Primary Hypertension: High blood pressure that is caused by another condition or disease is called primary or essential hypertension. It can result from multiple factors, including blood plasma volume and the activity of hormones that regulate blood volume and pressure. It is also influenced by environmental factors like stress and lack of exercise.

Secondary Hypertension: If high blood pressure is caused due to another condition. It has some specific cause and is a complication of another problem. It can result from kidney disease, diabetes, Cushing syndrome, hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, obesity, etc.

These are the numbers to watch when you have had your blood pressure tested:

  • Normal: Under 120/80
  • Prehypertension: 120/80 to 139/89
  • Hypertension Stage 1: 140/90 to 159/99
  • Hypertension Stage 2: 160/100 or higher
  • Hypertension Crisis: Above 180/110
