The UN is requesting $1.2 billion for North East humanitarian needs.

According to Matthias Schmale, the United Nations (UN) Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, $1.2 billion (N553.2b) is needed for immediate humanitarian needs in the North East.

He claims that the area is dealing with one of the worst humanitarian crises in history and estimates that 5.4 million people will require aid by 2023.

“The scale of suffering borne daily by women, men, and children in Borno State is alarming with enormous distress,” Schmale said in a statement released on Friday in Maiduguri. In addition, he blamed the horn of Africa’s climate change and the conflict in Ukraine for the humanitarian needs.

In addition, he continued, there are worries about extreme hunger in the North East and Burkina Faso in 2023.

If the situation among the region’s most vulnerable groups gets worse, he cautioned, “This could turn into famine.” He pointed out that the states of Adamawa and Yobe are still in dire need of immediate action.

“The region will need about $ 1.2b (N553.2b) to meet the needs of 5.4 million people,” he said. According to Schmale, the humanitarian community, working with the government and other partners, must address the needs of those in need and fight for their survival, well-being, and dignity.

Without them, we wouldn’t be able to assist the Nigerian government in meeting humanitarian needs, he claimed.

He also mentioned the launch of the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) in 2023.

He promised that “the humanitarian community will act jointly to save people’s lives and protect the most vulnerable.”
