Ralph Hasenhuttl has been fired as manager of Southampton.

Following Sunday’s 4-1 loss to Newcastle, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has been fired.

With just one victory in their previous nine games and three victories overall, the Saints are mired in the relegation zone in 18th place.

Hasenhuttl took over as the club’s manager in December 2018 after Mark Hughes stepped down.

Richard Kitzbichler, a first team assistant at Southampton, also left the organization.

According to bookies, 49-year-old Nathan Jones, the manager of Luton, has emerged as the early front-runner for the position. Jones is currently 1/5 with Bet Victor.

‘Hasenhüttl, who was hired in December 2018, departs having made a substantial contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity, and playing team,’ the organization said in a statement. However, we now think that the time is right to change.

“Everyone associated with the club would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Ralph for all of his efforts and the steadfast dedication he has displayed throughout his tenure as manager.

For our game on Wednesday night, First Team Lead Coach Rubén Sellés will serve as the team’s interim manager. In due course, the club will reveal a permanent successor.

Following the loss to Newcaslte, Sportsmail had claimed on Sunday that Hasenhuttl’s tenure with the team was about to come to an end.

After his team’s eighth loss in 14 Premier League games, which put them in the bottom three, his job at the club was hanging on the thinnest of threads.

The Saints management was torn between making the official decision to fire him or her before or during the World Cup, but they have opted to act on Monday.

After losing to Eddie Howe’s high-flying team on Sunday night, he seemed almost resigned to his fate. He responded, “I have taken a lot of decisions since I’ve been here but I don’t have to take this one,” when asked directly if he worried being fired.

More tellingly, the 55-year-old responded, “No… Not at the moment,” when asked if he could see a way out of the funk.

Southampton was in 18th place when Hasenhuttl took over in 2018, but he eventually led them to safety that year.

Southampton has placed 11th, 15th, and 15th in each of the three campaigns that have followed, although their recent form has been dreadful.

He has only accrued 17 points from 26 games since March of this year, and the south coast team has given up a staggering 54 goals during that time.
