Coach of the Super Eagles explains why his team lost against Portugal

Jose Peseiro, the manager of the Super Eagles, has acknowledged the factors that contributed to his team’s defeat by Portugal at Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The team’s 4-0 setback against his home Portugal in the friendly game on Thursday, according to the head coach, was too much.

Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario scored goals in the second half to give Portugal a well-deserved victory, and Bruno Fernandes, a midfielder for Manchester United, scored twice in the opening period.

However, the Eagles had a chance to tie the game with a penalty kick after Bright Osayi-Samuel was brought down. Rui Patricio of Portugal stopped Emmanuel Dennis’ effort to restore parity from the penalty spot.

Peseiro, however, claimed in an interview with NFF TV following the game that the Eagles’ first-half effort was below par.

“Losing 4-0 was too much; we didn’t get off to a good start in the first half, we didn’t play well as a team, and we didn’t put much pressure on the opposition. It’s true that the opposition has a lot of talent, but as I’ve already mentioned, the first half wasn’t very good and the second half was much better.

“I think we showed we could play better in the second half, but we missed a penalty and gave up two more goals. If we want to take home the next AFCON, we must develop.

The Super Eagles were the opponents of Portugal’s final exhibition game before the World Cup in Qatar.
