Bruno, a Manchester United player, responds to Ronaldo’s scoring celebration for Portugal

Bruno Fernandes, a star for Manchester United, acknowledged that he mistakenly believed Cristiano Ronaldo had scored for Portugal in their 2-0 victory over Uruguay on Monday. Ronaldo was given credit for both goals.

In the World Cup’s last 16, Portugal joined France and Brazil as the three nations to advance from the group stage after just two games, thanks in large part to Fernandes.

Fernandes curled in a cross for Portugal’s opening goal, and Ronaldo appeared to glance the header into the bottom corner after leaping high into the air. Replays revealed that the former United player did not make contact with the ball as the 37-year-old celebrated and claimed credit for the goal.

Ronaldo appeared perplexed when the PA system announced that Fernandes had actually been given the goal, which was later confirmed in the stadium. The United midfielder admitted after the game that he mistakenly believed his former teammate had scored.

I rejoiced as if Cristiano had scored, he remarked. I had the impression that he had contact with the ball. To cross the ball for him was my goal. Regardless of who scored, we are pleased with the victory. The fact that we achieved our goal of moving on to the next round is what matters most.

Ruben Dias, a defender for Manchester City who also played for Portugal, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance.

Even though we have all the people in the world, he continued, “We know that if we don’t work together, we won’t get anywhere. So, the significant example we provided tonight is this. We are overjoyed to advance to the following round. We should savor the present.
