Manchester United Goalkeeper Set Guinness World Record

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is now the proud owner of a Guinness World Record. The Argentine, who is statistically United’s best ever goalkeeper after recording an impressive 27 clean sheets in 42 games, now holds the record for the most goals scored from the halfway line in a minute. Romero smashed the previous record of five by banging in 20 goals in 60 seconds, with Ander Herrera and Phil Jones managing 19 and 14 respectively.
Manchester United completed the signing of Romero on a free transfer. He penned a three-year contract, with the option to extend for a further year, and reunited with his former AZ manager Louis van Gaal. Upon joining the club, Romero was given the number 20 shirt, saying: “There was a misunderstanding between myself and the manager, Van Gaal. He asked me what squad number I wanted, and I said 22. But he must have thought I’d said 21 because he told me if I wanted that number, I would have to go and speak with Ander Herrera. Anyway, it turned out Nick Powell had recently changed to 22, so I just said that no.20 would do fine.
Romero mastered the technique of firing in the shots in quick succession and an official adjudicator was on hand to give him his award and put him in the record books. But weirdly, the former Monaco shotstopper isn’t the only Manchester United player with a Guinness World Record to his name.
In July as part of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, young defender Axel Tuanzebe broke a world record during a game of Hungry Hippos – the classic family game whereby you have to feed your Hippo with marbles before anyone else can. On his Instagram story, the versatile defender posted a picture of him and official adjudicator Adam Brown with his new certificate, as well as a clip of United coaching staff singing his name in celebration.
Other members of the squad tried their hand at breaking records but only Tuanzebe emerged victorious – with teammates Andreas Pereira and RoShaun Williams congratulating him on social media. On the other side of Manchester, City goalkeeper Ederson is a world record holder after he produced the longest drop-kick in football back in May.
