Sweden Restricts The Use Of Transgender Youth Therapies

Sweden, the first nation to legalize gender reassignment, has started limiting hormone therapies for kids as it, like many Western nations, struggles with the delicate topic.

The medical profession must balance prudence against the hazards of not providing therapy to persons who are experiencing “gender dysphoria” as the number of diagnosis soars.

In December, the National Board of Health and Welfare ruled that mastectomy procedures for young females seeking to transition should only be performed in a research context. Sweden agreed in February 2022 to stop hormone treatment for children, except in very rare circumstances.

Thomas Linden, the department director for the Board, said in a statement in December that “the unclear state of information calls for prudence.”

Young teenagers who are considering gender transition have taken so-called puberty blockers to postpone the start of unwelcome bodily changes.

The prevalence of gender dysphoria, a condition where a person may feel pain due to a mismatch between their biological sex and the gender they identify as, has increased dramatically in Sweden, as it has in many other nations.

In Sweden, a nation of almost 10 million people, between 1998 and 2021, 8,900 individuals received a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, according to the Board of Health and Welfare.

About 820 new instances were recorded in 2021 alone.

Females aged 13 to 17 who were born in this period are most affected by the tendency, which has increased by 1,500% since 2008.

According to psychiatrist Mikael Landen, head physician at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, “It used to be a male phenomena and there is a substantial female over-representation,” he told AFP.
