Prepare To Mitigate Against Floods In 2023, NEMA Advises Stakeholders.

Mustapha Habib Ahmed, the director general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has warned stakeholders to be ready and braced for the possibility of flooding this year.

He issued the advise in light of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NIMET) 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction, which was published last week and predicted that several states this year would have normal to above-average rainfall.

The NEMA DG stressed the need for State Governments to support their own Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) to be operationally ready as well as establish Local Emergency Committees (LEMCs) for local participation in disaster management during a speech he gave in Abuja over the weekend. Last year’s flood, which devastated many communities across the states, left many in ruins.

At the conclusion of the Bournemouth University Disaster Management Centre (BUDMC)-facilitated International Disaster Management Executive Seminar for Nigerian Emergency Management Stakeholders, Mustapha Habib Ahmed addressed the attendees and noted that the Agency had already started its preparation as evidenced by the capacity training seminar.
