Plans To Have A Second Presidential Election Are Denied By Inec.

Reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) intended to hold further polls in response to the presidential and National Assembly elections have been refuted by INEC.

Also, INEC denied that it intended to conduct a second round of voting for the State Assembly and governor elections on Saturday.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairperson of the Information and Voter Education Committee, made this declaration.

The Commission will declare the date of the supplemental polls following the Governorship and State Assembly elections, according to Okoye.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been made aware of a news article that gave the impression that the Commission intended to hold additional elections in connection with the Saturday, March 18, 2023, presidential and national assembly elections, as well as the governorship and state assembly elections. That’s incorrect.

In response to the Presidential and National Assembly elections, “The Commission has not planned the holding of supplemental elections. For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission will announce the date of the supplemental polls following the Governorship and State Assembly elections.

The two National Assembly elections that the Commission had previously halted and rescheduled to coincide with the Governorship and State Assembly elections should not be confused with this, nevertheless. The first is the Enugu East Senatorial District election, which was annulled in accordance with Section 34 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022 to enable the Labour Party to hold a new primary election to replace its dead candidate. After problems with the electoral vote, the second is the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency of Edo State. These polls, which were postponed previously, are not additional elections.

The public was warned by Okoye to ignore any reports about the holding of additional elections in addition to the governorship and state assembly elections that would take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 18, 2023.
