Drama As Woman Is Ordered To Pay Her Ex-fiance N1m
A lady was sentenced by a Ugandan court to repay her ex-fiance a total of 9.4 million shillings ($2,550; £2,060) for failing to marry him after four years of dating.
Fortunate Kyarikunda violated her vow to Richard Tumwine, according to the judgement delivered on Thursday by Magistrate Asanasio Mukobi of the court in Kanungu.
According to Mukobi, the sum was what Tumwine paid for Kyarikunda’s legal and academic expenses as monetary reparation for his psychological suffering.
Since Tumwine was older than Kyarikunda, Kyarikunda had claimed that her parents had refused to approve the union.
The defendant’s claim that her parents advised her against marrying an older guy was rejected by the court, which ruled that it was “unreasonable, a deception, and a fraud.”
She “had all the opportunity to immediately refuse the Plaintiff’s love demands and avoid interfering with his financial duties,” the magistrate said.
However, according to reports, it is uncertain if Kyarikunda would challenge the decision since the ruling was erroneous because, unlike marriage, an engagement should not be legally binding.
