Court Postpones Emefiele Lawsuit On $53 Million Judgment Debt

A lawsuit against Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele was postponed by a Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday until March 20.

The meeting was adjourned without explanation.

Emefiele had been ordered by the court to appear after an arrest request resulting from a $53 million verdict in the Paris Club return case.

On October 20, 2022, Justice Inyang Ekwo issued the summons in a request for a garnishee order.

Emefiele was required to present yesterday since it was the scheduled hearing date, according to the presiding judge.

The decision came after a Senior Advocate of Nigeria named Joe Agi filed a request for an order instructing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to detain Emefiele and bring him to court with his attorneys against Linas International Ltd, the Minister of Finance, and the CBN.

Emefiele must appear “to be examined on oath touching the means you have or have had, since the date of the said garnishee order absolute, to pay the balance of $53 million now due and payable under the said garnishee order absolute and also show cause why you should not be committed to prison for default in payment of the said sum,” according to a court order from January 23, 2020.
