Okowa to Buhari: “Count Me Out Of Governors Looting LG Allocation”

Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, has cleared himself of the charges made against him by President Muhammadu Buhari about the theft of local government funding.

Buhari had previously accused governors of interfering with the monthly funding provided to local councils, which he claimed was the cause of the underdevelopment of communities in council areas.

The president made this announcement on Thursday during a discussion with participants in the Kuru Senior Executive Course No. 44 (2022) of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Abuja.

Okowa, the vice presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), responded in Asaba through his chief press secretary, Olisa Ifeajika, saying it was unfortunate for the president to have made such a “blanket statement.”

“I want to say that Mr. President, as one who has all the information about problems in the nation, knows the governors who fall into that category of the so-called ‘thieves,'” he said.

“We are all aware that Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, our own governor, does not belong there. When local government autonomy was agreed upon, he was one of the first governors to support it, if not the first. He also supported the courts and the legislature.

He even succeeded in having laws passed that gave the legislature and the courts independence. He gave them free rein to operate. Additionally, a man who granted this level of autonomy to these governmental bodies is ineligible to handle local governments’ funds.

“I reiterate that the Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa administration adds more than N300 million per month to the finances of the state’s local governments to ensure that they can cover employee salaries and maintain themselves.

“He does it on a regular basis, so how can a guy who does that be one of those who steal money from the local government?

Our governor isn’t involved in it. As you are also aware, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration recently released N5 billion to pay off pension arrears, of which N2.5 billion was given to the local government to be used for pension payments.

“The local government is not going to pay; it is a grant. The governor took that action because local governments need to provide funding for their programs and pay teachers and healthcare workers.

It is noteworthy that Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, and Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, challenged President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday to name the governors stealing funds intended for the local councils in their states.
