Northern Christians are divided on Peter Obi’s endorsement.

Some eminent Northern Christian leaders have distanced themselves from Babachir Lawal, the former secretary to the government of the federation, who supported Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate.

Former House of Representatives speaker Yakubu Dogara and his group said that Northern APC members never chose to support Obi.

The organization said that Lawal made the choice to support Obi.

Lawal said a few days earlier that the panel had chosen the LP presidential candidate after much deliberation.

As a result of the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, the organization swore not to support it.

They bemoaned the fact that the APC should have chosen a Northern Christian as their vice presidential candidate rather than a Muslim.

Dogara, Simon Achuba, Albert Atiwurcha, Prof. Doknan Sheni, Mela Nunge (SAN), Gen. Ishaya Bauka (rtd), Prof. Ibrahim Haruna, and Mrs. Leah Olusiyi all signed a statement collectively rejecting the endorsement.

They said that the organization has not yet revealed whoever it will support in 2023.

“We wish to bring the public’s attention to the current stance that our chairman, B.D. Lawal, has been advocating as the position of our organisation.

“We want to make it clear that the essential discussions have been completed, and based on factual evidence that is clearly indisputable, the group is prepared to take a stance that will be made known to the public at an upcoming interfaith gathering.

“Suffice to say, nobody in the group—not even the chairman—has been ordered to address the media about our stance at this crucial juncture. Our strategy called for our perspective to be made known to the broader public at the above-mentioned occasion. That still holds true, the organization said.
