Lagos will prohibit the sale of bottles of beverages that have been exposed to the sun.

The selling of beverages in plastic bottles that have been exposed to the sun will soon be prohibited by the Lagos State Government.

Mr. Afolabi Solebo, general manager of the Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), revealed this.

Solebo said that the choice was made because drinking beverages in plastic bottles that are constantly exposed to sunlight is exceedingly carcinogenic and detrimental to health. He also disclosed that a campaign to educate the public was in the works.

He stated:

“Plastic bottled beverages are very carcinogenic and hazardous to health when exposed to prolonged sunshine. Therefore, from now until the end of the year, it will be a part of our public education.

“In order that by 2023 we will not only seize these beverages but also punish anybody found to be exhibiting them in the open.

“We also want to meet with the producers of those bottled beverages to discuss stakeholder issues in order to acquire other items for distributors to exhibit.

“The purpose of putting such things on show in the sun is to entice customers to make purchases. Therefore, because they mimic the actual thing, placing dummies in the light has no impact.

Solebo asked customers to avoid consumables that kill people little by bit in addition to encouraging them to always make sure they receive value for their money on all goods and services provided to them.

Added him;

Therefore, consumers do have obligations in addition to their rights to safety, information, product clarity and quality, freedom of choice, and voice.

Additionally, they have the right to consumer education and, in particular, the right to seek redress in court or in our office; we turn to litigation when we are unable to reach an amicable resolution.
