gifts to flood victims confirmed by Bayelsa

In reaction to the floods in the state, the Bayelsa State administration has accepted contributions from international organizations, state governments, political parties, their presidential candidates, individuals, and business organizations.

At his opening comments at the weekly state executive council meeting on Wednesday in Government House, Yenagoa, Governor Douye Diri revealed that the government had received contributions from people and business organizations during and after the floods in the form of money, food, and other supplies.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to openness in a statement released by his chief press secretary, Daniel Alabrah, and reassured the public that they wouldn’t be kept in the dark about the flood contributions.

He mentioned the Akwa Ibom and Lagos State governments as donors, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who gave N55 million, and Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who gave N10 million.

In the meanwhile, Dr. Emmanuel Hart, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Bayelsa State for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said Wednesday that 1,250,102 registered voters in Bayelsa State are included on the register that is available for claims and objections.

Dr. Hart said PVCs have been sorted and counted by INEC council employees and would be sent to different INEC electoral offices in preparation for collection by the owners while speaking at a stakeholders meeting on the process for collecting permanent voter cards in Yenagoa.

Political party chairmen and state directors of the National Orientation Agency were present during the conference (NOA),

The meeting was purposefully scheduled a few days before the start of PVC collection on December 12 and included state coordinators of the Nigeria Human Rights Commission (NHRC), representatives of CSOs and NGOs, heads of INEC departments, and members of the press.
