At a Jamaican high school, students collapse during prayer

At Oberlin High in St. Andrew, Jamaica, classes were terminated early on Wednesday, October 26, due to an incident in which pupils allegedly fell to the ground and screamed during a religious activity.

Over 200 children passed out during the event, a school staff member who spoke to Observer Online said.

A member of staff said that a female instructor was addressing the pupils’ conduct when she decided to pray for them after claiming to have received a message from God. Students started shivering and “falling” shortly after the instructor began to pray.

According to reports, the injured pupils were sent to the Kingston Public Hospital, Stony Hill Health Center, and Lawrence Tavern Health Center.

Additionally, it was discovered that the principal, board members, and school held a meeting to discuss the occurrence.

The nation’s Ministry of Education claims to be looking into the occurrence and will inform the public of its findings.

One of the impacted children told Radio Jamaica News that during devotion, she and her classmates lost their bearings. She said that she is unsure of precisely how many pupils passed out.

The pupil remarked;

“So, when we were all observing devotion up there, they began to pray, and… The professors were animated, and an 11-year-old girl who is also a prefect at Oberlin High School became animated. Everyone then practically starts to faint after that.

I’m not sure of the exact number, but Oberlin High School’s auditorium was packed, as was the nurse’s office, the agricultural lab, and Pickney outside, who was repeatedly fainting.

Later, Antoinette Gray, the temporary principal of Oberlin High School, made an effort to explain.

She said that at the general assembly in the schoolyard, all students and instructors were given the chance to share what she refers to as “words” with the pupils by two teachers.

The administrator went on to say that she thought some pupils began to “worship loudly” because they were “overpowered by the anointing.” Others, she said, had to be carried to the nurse because they were unable to control their behavior, and some of them had even passed out.
