ASUU Will Call a NEC Meeting

In reaction to the Federal Government’s decision to pay academics just half of their usual salaries, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called an urgent meeting of its National Executive Council.

The Punch asserts that a date has not yet been set for the meeting. The instructors criticized the administration for not paying them their full salary.

On Monday, February 14, 2022, ASUU went on strike to demand more from the government.

Eight months later, ASUU ordered its members to immediately return work after suspending their strike after many discussions between the union’s members and the federal government.

Days after the court of appeals ordered the union to terminate its strike, the decision to halt the strike was made.

According to the union’s president, Emmanuel Osodeke, the eight-month-old strike was put on hold as a result of a court decision.

The concerns have not been totally addressed, and no contract has been signed, he said. As a result, we are starting again since we respect the law and don’t want to breach it. Additionally, we are expecting that the speaker’s stated involvement would quickly find a solution to these issues.

The professors, however, got their monthly pay in half at the end of October.

Osodeke confirmed that they were paid half pay and that no explanations at all had been offered. We discovered that Ngige instructed the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System in a letter to only pay us for the time when we ended the strike.

We haven’t received the letter, although having heard there was one. A meeting will soon be called.

The Federal Government has not yet responded to the lecturers’ accusation.
